Reasons for supporting this charity. On April 14th 2008 we (Graham and I) had twin grandsons born at Derriford Neo- natal unit 16 weeks premature, originally due Aug 4th. Twin one Kenzie weighed 1lb 13oz and twin two Kaiden weighed an unbelievable 1lb 3oz.
Both boys had to be ventilated and Kenzie had both lungs collapsed and a kidney failed, he battled through and was transferred to Exeter Neo-natal unit until he eventually went home August 28th, 19 weeks after he was born.
Kaiden however went down a different road and he too suffered kidney failure and twice we came very very close to losing him, like a true little soldier he battled pnuemonia, bronchitis and with very underdeveloped lungs he needed steroids to help him grow. Due to many tube changes etc he stopped taking a bottle and has to be tube fed thus slowing down his growth.
But despite all this Kaiden was eventually discharged on the 28th December 2008 to start the New Year home with his family.
If you are on facebook their update is on there "Story of the Jones/Wood twins".
The "Neo-natal intensive care unit" (nnicu) is always grateful of donations for various things like vital equipment, incubators and even things like toys to stimulate the babies and even tiny clothes. They also help with financial things for the parents who have to travel long distances to be with their babies, I know my son had a 120 mile round trip to Derriford and with a two year old at home they weren't always able to stay at the hospital. The list could go on and on and I know most of us probably feel that we shouldn't have to have charity's for these purposes but its unfortunate that we do.
The most deserving people is the caring staff that work in these places, they were absolutely fantastic..thank you
